Emmanuel Macron has fought off far-right Marine le Pen to win the French presidency, according to exit polls.

He is projected to have won 65% of votes in the French presidential election,

while Marine Le Pen secured 35%.

Voters went to the polls for the second round of the election today, when the

choice was narrowed down to the two with most votes.

This election was the first in almost 60 years when neither of the established

leftwing and rightwing parties made it to the final.

Macron, 39, a former Socialist economy minister and one-time banker, founded

his own party, ‘En Marche!’, aiming to transcend the divide between left and

right.
